Laminated shim stock is comprised of layers of metal foil. Each layer is .002", .003", or .005" thick. The foil layers are coated with a very thin adhesive, and then are compressed and bonded into a single solid sheet. Sheets can be any thickness -- typical are .020", 1/16", 1/8". When the sheets are cut into shims, the resultant parts are ideal for the aeronautical, armament, and shipbuilding industries. The laminating process allows individual layers of foil to be peeled off with a knife blade on site to achieve the desired thickness for each shim. In this way the close tolerances of a precision shim is obtained without the considerable time and expense of precision manufacturing of each shim. Laminated shims have the advantages of solid shims and loose leaf shims in one. But instead of having to stack a number of thin and easily damaged individual shims, a single shim can be slipped into position. Savings on shim inventory and handling damage can be significant. The use of laminated shims also prevents dirt and foreign matter from being introduced between layers. When in place, the compressibility or "cold flow" of a laminated shim is less than that of either a solid or a loose leaf shim. Laminated shims are available in brass, carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Shims can be fabricated with full laminations, or from 1/2 solid or 3/4 solid stock. Mc Gaskets laminated shims are fabricated from sheets manufactured according to AMS-DTL-22499.

COMPOSITIONS
Laminations and Solid Stock

Composition 1
The laminations shall be manufactured from aluminum alloy 1100, conforming to QQ-A-250/1, temper Hl9 or aluminum alloy 5052 conforming to QQ-A-250/8, temper Hl9 or H39.

The solid stock shall be manufactured from aluminum alloys conforming to QQ-A-250/5 (alclad 2024) tempers T3, T4, T81 or T86 for use with QQ- A-250/1 laminates, and QQ-A250/8 (5052), tempers H32 or H34 for use with QQ-A-250/8 laminates.

Composition 2
The laminations and solid stock shall be manufactured from brass conforming to Composition 2, of QQ-B-613, temper one-quarter hard or harder.

Composition 3
The laminations and solid stock shall be manufactured from corrosion resisting steel conforming to QQ-S-766, Class 302, Condition A or MIL- S-5059, Composition 302, Condition A.

Composition 4
